Bible verses about friendship

Proverbs has more to say about friends than about almost anything else, which tells you the writers thought friendship was serious, not a side quest. Who you're close to shapes who you become. A real friend will tell you something you don't want to hear. Gossip can end a friendship that took years to build.

The Bible's best friendships are worth knowing by name. Jonathan, the king's son, giving up his own claim to the throne for David. Ruth refusing to leave a mother-in-law who had nothing left to offer her. Job's friends, who did the one right thing (sitting in silence for a week) before doing many wrong ones.

And then Jesus, calling his followers friends instead of servants, and defining friendship as being willing to die for someone. If you've got one person like that, you're rich. If you don't right now, the loneliness page is honest about that, and the verses below are still worth reading, because they're also about how to be that person for someone else.

  1. A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

A friend loves you the whole time, and a brother is born to help you through the hard days.

‘At all times’ includes the times when you're not fun, not useful, and not replying. Most friendships are conditional on you being okay. The proverb defines a real one as the opposite.

  2. A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

Someone with loads of mates can still end up wrecked, but there's a kind of friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Numbers versus depth. The Hebrew of the first half is famously hard, but the contrast is clear: a wide circle can leave you exposed, and one loyal friend can carry you. Christians have long read the second half as pointing to Jesus too.

  3. 9Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

Two are better than one, because together their work pays off. If one of them falls, the other can pull them up. But it's a bad place to be, falling alone with no one to lift you.

Ecclesiastes is a skeptical book. It doubts almost everything. It does not doubt this. Falling with nobody around is named as one of the genuinely bad things about being alive, which is a kind of permission to admit you need people.

  4. 12“This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do whatever I command you. 15No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

Here's my command: love each other the way I've loved you. There's no greater love than giving up your life for your friends. You're my friends if you do what I've told you. I'm not calling you servants anymore, because a servant doesn't know what his master is doing. I've called you friends, because everything my Father told me, I've passed on to you.

Jesus says this the night before he's arrested, so ‘lay down his life’ isn't abstract. His definition of friendship has two parts: sacrifice, and telling each other the truth about what's going on. Servants get orders. Friends get explanations.

  5. The wounds of a friend are faithful, although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

You can trust the wounds a friend gives you. An enemy's kisses can't be trusted.

The person who tells you the hard thing is more of a friend than the one who only ever tells you what you want to hear. If someone in your life risks your annoyance to be honest with you, that's rarer than it sounds. Keep them.

  6. Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart; so does earnest counsel from a man’s friend.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

Perfume and incense make the heart glad. So does a friend's honest advice.

Advice from a friend is compared to a nice smell, which is a quiet way of saying it's a pleasure, not a chore. The word is ‘earnest’: counsel that comes from actually caring, not from wanting to be right.

  7. 1When he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2Saul took him that day, and wouldn’t let him go home to his father’s house any more. 3Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

As soon as David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan found his soul bound to David's, and he loved him as much as he loved himself. Saul kept David with him that day and wouldn't let him go home. Jonathan and David made a covenant, because Jonathan loved him like his own soul.

Jonathan is heir to the throne. David is the one God has chosen to replace him. Jonathan knows this, and chooses friendship over his own future. The Bible's clearest picture of a friend is someone who wants your good even when it costs them.

  8. 16Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. 17Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

Ruth said, ‘Don't push me to leave you or turn back from following you. Where you go, I'll go. Where you stay, I'll stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I'll die, and that's where I'll be buried. May the Lord deal with me severely if anything but death separates us.’

People read this at weddings. Ruth said it to her mother-in-law, a bitter widow with no money and no prospects. It's the most extravagant loyalty in the Bible and it's between two women who owed each other nothing. The whole story is on the Ruth page.

  9. 11Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him. 12When they lifted up their eyes from a distance, and didn’t recognize him, they raised their voices, and wept; and they each tore his robe, and sprinkled dust on their heads toward the sky. 13So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

When Job's three friends heard about all the disaster that had hit him, each of them set out from home: Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. They'd agreed to go together to grieve with him and comfort him. When they saw him from a distance, they didn't recognize him. They wept out loud, tore their robes, and threw dust over their heads. Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, and nobody said a word, because they could see how much pain he was in.

For seven days, Job's friends are perfect. They show up, they cry, they say nothing. Then in chapter 4 they open their mouths and spend thirty chapters making it worse. The lesson is uncomfortable: presence helps, explanations usually don't.

  10. One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

Spend time with wise people and you'll get wiser. Hang around with fools and you'll get hurt.

Not snobbery, just observation. You become like the people you're closest to. It's worth asking who, in your five closest, you want to become more like, and who you don't.

  11. 24Don’t befriend a hot-tempered man. Don’t associate with one who harbors anger, 25lest you learn his ways and ensnare your soul.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

Don't make friends with someone who's always angry. Don't get close to a person with a short fuse, or you'll pick up their habits and get yourself trapped.

One of the few times the Bible says outright ‘don't befriend this type’. The reason isn't that angry people are worthless. It's that anger is contagious, and you'll end up carrying something that was never yours.

  12. A perverse man stirs up strife. A whisperer separates close friends.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

A twisted person starts fights, and a gossip splits up close friends.

‘Whisperer’ is the word. Not a shout, a whisper. The Bible knows that most friendships don't end in a blow-up. They end with something said quietly to a third person. If you're the whisperer, stop. If you're being whispered about, go to the source.

  13. He who covers an offense promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

Someone who lets an offense go builds love. Someone who keeps bringing it up drives close friends apart.

This isn't ‘never mention it’. It's about the second, third, and tenth time. Every friendship has things that need to be forgiven and then actually left behind. Re-raising a settled wrong is described as the way you lose a best friend.

  14. 24Let’s consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
    Gen Zsame meaning, your words

Let's think about how to spur each other on toward love and good deeds. Don't give up meeting together, like some have got into the habit of doing. Keep encouraging each other, and even more so as you see the Day getting closer.

The New Testament's word for friendship is mostly ‘one another’. This one adds that showing up physically matters, and that some people had already stopped. Encouragement doesn't happen over text alone. It needs a room.

What to actually do with these

Text one person you've drifted from. Not a paragraph, just ‘thought of you, how are things’. That's Hebrews 10:24-25 at its smallest. Then look at Proverbs 27:6 and ask whether you have anyone who tells you the truth, and whether you've made it safe for them to. If you're the one who's been hurt by a friend, Proverbs 17:9 isn't asking you to pretend, only to decide whether it's been dealt with. The five-day Friendship plan reads David and Jonathan, Ruth, and John 15 at about ten minutes a day, and the Ruth page is worth a read on its own.

Questions people ask

What does the Bible say about choosing friends?

It says choose carefully, because you'll become like them. Proverbs 13:20 (walk with the wise, grow wise) and 1 Corinthians 15:33 (bad company corrupts good character) are the two blunt versions. Proverbs 22:24-25 names one type to avoid: the chronically angry. Positively, look for loyalty (Proverbs 17:17), honesty even when it stings (Proverbs 27:6), and someone who doesn't gossip (Proverbs 16:28). None of this means you can only be friends with Christians. Jesus was famous for who he ate with. It means being clear-eyed about who's shaping you.

Is it okay to have friends who aren't Christians?

Yes. Jesus was criticized for eating with the wrong people and didn't stop (Luke 7:34). Paul says explicitly that avoiding non-Christians would mean leaving the world (1 Corinthians 5:9-10). The warnings about ‘bad company’ are about influence, not labels: a Christian friend who drags you down is worse for you than a non-Christian friend who makes you kinder. What matters is whether the friendship is honest, whether you can be yourself, and whether you're being pulled somewhere you don't want to go.

How do I deal with a friend who betrayed me?

The Bible has a psalm for this. Psalm 55 is David being betrayed by a close friend, and he's furious and heartbroken in the same breath. So start there: you're allowed to feel it. Then Matthew 18:15: go to them directly if there's anything left to save. If there isn't, forgiveness (Colossians 3:13) is still asked of you, but forgiveness means dropping the claim to revenge, not restoring the friendship as if nothing happened. Trust is rebuilt, if at all, over time. The forgiveness page goes further.

Why is it so hard to make friends as an adult?

The Bible doesn't explain it, but it does model the fix. Nearly every friendship in it formed around shared work or shared trouble: David and Jonathan in a war, Ruth and Naomi in grief, the disciples on the road. Friendship rarely comes from trying to make friends. It comes from doing something alongside people, repeatedly. Hebrews 10:25 is about not giving up on showing up, which is unglamorous and works. If loneliness is the sharper edge right now, that page is honest about it.
